Orsina Labradors

Labrador Retriever Dog Breeder - Australia

We are a small family owned and operated kennel based in Perth Western Australia, following our relocation from Mackay QLD. Our kennel was first founded in the sunshine state back in 2014.
# We will be relocating back to QLD once again in near future.

Originally, I am from County Durham in the North East of England. Living in the countryside, I grew up watching Labrador Retrievers in all their glory, and fell in love with the breed at an early age, due to many numerous family members owning and breeding them themselves. After moving to Australia as a teenager I started my career as a Veterinary Nurse in 2003 and have been working in the industry as one ever since, following my qualification in 2006. As my career and interest in the Labrador breed progressed, I learnt more and more about Labradors and in particular the diseases they were predisposed to. Soon after moving interstate in early 2014 to Mackay in North Qld, I began participating in conformation shows, under the Mackay Kennel Club. It was enlightening and it soon became my desire, to one day also join the many other responsible and ethical breeders here in Australia. I found that each individual, is passionate in their efforts to improve and preserve and be a true custodian to their own chosen breed here in Australia. I became a member of the ANKC in late 2014 and the rest as they say is history.
We are current members of Dogs West (Dogs Qld prior to this) which is the state governing body for the ANKC. We are registered breeders under the prefix Orsina.

Since returning to Perth, we are currently taking a hiatus of exhibiting our dogs in conformation shows. Due to us beginning to also extend our little two legged family. However our dogs have enjoyed participating in sporting activities such as DockDogs during this time, while I have continued to educate myself in my ongoing interest of Canine behavior, something I feel very passionate about both for my own dogs and within my career.

Our dogs are members of our family first and foremost! We breed quite simply to better the breed, both in health and temperament. Our puppies are for families who love Labradors just as much as we do, to fill your homes with love, joy and happy memories.
There will be limited numbers of puppies available as we are a very small kennel and our ladies will only have a litter every 18 or so months. Therefore you may have to wait a little while for your new family member to arrive.

Please note that desexing is a condition of sale for our pups sold on the limited register. (Which means they are pets only and not to be used for breeding). For those families wanting a pup on mains registration, this can be discussed at a later date.

All genuine inquiries and questions welcome.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.Hip and elbow scoring is performed after 12 months if age, as well as breed profile DNA testing (even if they are clear by parentage). All of these have been great results and we are really happy with them, these screening tests are performed, prior to any breeding. There is also a minimum yearly health check/blood screening also carried out with our veterinarian to ensure they are fit and well. All dogs are up to date with vaccinations and parasite control.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.All pups remain with us a minimum of 8 weeks of age, so we can socialize them all with handling, noise and surrounding environment, in a fear free, positive reinforcement way. Bite inhibition/play is learnt with litter mates and mother. We aim to set our pups up with confidence for the best early start in life as possible.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.All answers of the puppy questionnaire are to be answered truthfully. This is because we choose (based on our experience and those answer) which pup goes where. We have found this to be extremely successful in the placement of our pups into their new homes.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.All interested families must complete puppy interest questionnaire at time of inquiry. Later at time of purchase, a puppy purchase agreement is required to be agreed upon and signed.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.We have a private Facebook group for all the families to be members of and share updates with each other. All pups owners are able to contact me throughout the lifetime (some have since become close friends). Some keep in touch and reach out with questions or just want to share a photo update. We are always available to offer advice or assistance where we can.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.We have had one pup that was unfortunately returned to us due to a marriage breakdown (pup was then aged 2) we took her back with no hesitation and she was fostered until we could find her new forever home (where she is no thriving). This is written in our puppy purchase agreement as one if the terms - if family can no longer keep/care for their pup/dog it is returned to us rather than be rehomed.
