Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Large Munsterlander Dog Breeder - SA

I have been breeding Large Munsterlanders since 1993 and English Setters since 2012 and PBGVs since 2016.

I only breed when I want to keep a show prospect so I am selective with the dogs I use, it also means I only have a litter every couple of years, not multiple litters a year.

Breeders of Champion, Grand Champion, Obedience Champion, Tracking Champion and Agility titled Large Munsterlanders. I have competed in Retrieving as well as Obedience, Agility and Showing as I believe the breed should be dual purpose as well as being a loving family pet.

My PBGVs are Best in Show, Runner Up Best in Show and Best in Group winners that have become Champions, Grand Champions and Supreme Champions.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.PBGV's are DNA Tested for Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) they also have eye tests to look for PPM and Glaucoma. My Large Munsterlanders are hip and elbow scored.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.My puppies are raised inside our home with noises till 4 weeks, then they live outside during the day, inside at night. We also like to take them (once old enough) to places like Bunnings. My older dogs regularly attend Pet and Animal Expos.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.I will ask questions pertinent to the breeds, as an example PBGV's should not be let off lead as their hunting instinct and great noses can send them chasing scents, therefore a fully fenced year is a must, as is the willingness to keep them on lead. Previous experience with the same or similar breeds is an advantage however I am always willing to mentor new people as well.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.Conditions of sale are generally related to the wishes of the stud dog owner so may change from litter to litter. Desexing under 12 months is not recommended due to the health issues it causes, however all pets should be desexed past that age. Prospective owners will be vetted for suitability prior to getting a puppy.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.I am always available to support you and your puppy/adult through life.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.
