Furdinkum - British Shorthair Breeders Aust - Brisbane, Queensland

British Shorthair Cat Breeder - QLD

Located north of Brisbane, Furdinkum is a boutique, home-based cattery breeding from quality, registered British Shorthair stock. The British Shorthair is a sturdy, compact cat with deep-chested, Cobby Body and unique dense coat. They are good with children and other animals and are highly adaptable, easy to care for and love to be close to humans.

Because these cats are relatively low maintenance and lovable, they make an ideal pet. We only breed a limited number of litters per year and aim to produce quality kittens with an excellent temperament, good health and characteristics true to the breed. I have imported quite a few cats now from around the world to improve the quality and health of my breeding lines.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).
Answer. Yes.I DNA test all my breeding cats for traits and diseases. My females are only mated once each year. I regularly show my cats. My cats are fed top quality wet and dry food. Kittens are raised in my home not in a cattery set up, kittens are vaccinated twice and are desexed prior to leaving me at no less than 12 weeks of age. The welfare of my cats/kittens is paramount to me and I dont just sell them to anyone.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?
Answer. Yes.Kittens are raised in my home and not isolated in a cattery environment, with my two small dogs.

Placement & matching

Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.I have a very indepth questionnaire that covers everything I could think of from whether you own your own home to why they chose my breed of cat . If I dont think the purchaser has answered the questions to my standards, then I do not sell them a cat or kitten. I will ALWAYS take the cat or kitten back if the purchaser is unable to keep the cat for whatever reason, or I will find a new home for them. I would be totally mortified if a cat I bred ended up for sale on gumtree.
Question. What written information about the conditions of sale, warranty, and information concerning the care and maintenance of the breed do you provide?
Answer. Yes.I have a contract which includes what I expect from the buyer and what guarantees I will supply to them. I give a health guarantee for any genetic problems, my cats and kittens are desexed and also have 2 vaccinations before they leave me. Selling a cat or kitten entire, is not an option. I rarely sell breeding cats, and if I do, it is only to known and trusted friends. I also have a rather indepth questionnaire that needs to be completed before I will agree to sell any of my cats or kittens. Buyers have to meet strict standards to be able to purchase one of my kittens/cats.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.
Answer. Yes.I am always available to help owners throughout the lifetime of the cat with health issues, feeding, toileting, good times or bad, or even if they just want to brag about their cat. I love getting photos of my babies growing up in their new homes as I get great joy from the love and happiness a pet can bring to a home.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?
Answer. Yes.Always .. I will always take a cat back and if that isnt possible, then I will find a new home for them - no questions asked. I couldnt stand it if one of my babies ended up on Gumtree or similar. I like to know where all my fur babies are.

Clubs & Associations

Question. Are you a current member of any breed clubs and/or associations?
