Finnish Lapphund Dog Breeder - Melbourne , Vic

We are passionate breed enthusiasts who have been involved with Finnish Lapphunds for 15 years. At home, we are owned by a trio of beautiful Lappies. We breed sparingly to ensure we can dedicate all our collective knowledge, experience and time in to caring for our mums and raising puppies without compromises.

We breed one to two litters a year, meaning we may not have a puppy available when you get in touch. You are welcome to join our waiting list and get to know us better to see if we'd be the right fit for you, or we can refer you to other Finnish Lapphund breeders who share our sentiments and views on how dogs should be bred and raised, in a loving home environment. If you are local to the SE Vic and would like to meet a Lappie, don't be afraid to get in touch through our email, we are only too happy to answer your questions.

Breeder Questionnaire

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? Do you have sensible, sustainable breeding strategies in place to promote the health of your dogs and puppies?
Yes
The health and genetic diversity are paramount for the longevity of this breed. All dogs included in our breeding program are health screened according to recommendations from the Finnish Lapphund Club of Finland and we follow the guidelines produced by the Finnish Lapphund club of Victoria. This includes ophthalmology screening every two years (eye checks), including goinioscopy. Hip and elbow X-rays to ensure joints are healthy and full DNA profiling as well as echocardiograms.
Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Yes
Pups should always be raised in a home environment with access to human interaction. Once old enough and on their feet, friends and family are invited to meet them and well as potential owners. Our puppies are incredibly well cared for and we invite and encourage potential owners to come and see the difference in how we raise our puppies and ask as many questions as they can. We take great pride in our methods and thorough approach, and have adapted a socialising routine that has been proven across litters and developed to suit the unique requirements of a Finnish Lapphund. All our puppies receive the basics in clicker training, including loose lead walking, the beginnings of recall, and basic obedience commands. They venture out in a controlled environment with the assistance of trainers to gain exposure in a safe way, to various experiences they’ll deal with in every day life. Relaxing at a cafe, building/construction sites, busy streets and traffic, vet trips etc. We put the hard work in to grooming to ensure our puppies are set up for success with regular bathing, blow drying, brushing and nails trims whilst they are with us. We challenge you to see the difference for yourself.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Yes
We have a comprehensive sales agreement that new owners and myself must sign prior to taking a puppy home, its sole purpose is to protect the puppy. It outlines what owners can expect from me and what I expect from them. This includes a desexing arrangement upon physical maturity if we have no other arrangements, and a health guarantee amongst other things. I have an enquiry form which outlines basic questions for potential families to think about and will not let a puppy go to someone I haven't met. We encourage you to meet us prior to puppies arriving so you can be best prepared.
Question. Is ensuring that your puppies go to the right home a high priority? What type of measures do you take to ensure your dogs and puppies are going to go to loving homes?
Yes
Our screening process is very thorough as a puppy is a big commitment that shouldn’t be taken lightly. We will ask you lots of questions about your expectations, what kind of activities you’d like to do with your dog, what your vision is and where you’d like to be in 5 years time, why a lappie specifically, what kind of experience you have with dogs or spitz breeds. Dont be alarmed, these questions are to ensure we have the most facts we can before making decisions about the right fit for your family. We ask you to be as honest as you can because we only want the best match for you. If you tell us you lead an active life, and want an active dog to do all the activities with, which isn’t a true reflection of your life, we are likely to put the dog best suited to an active family, with you. This sets both you and the puppy up to fail and you’ll be butting heads from the start. There are no right or wrong answers, the more information we have, the more likely we’ll be able to match you with the perfect companion.
Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Yes
All our puppies come with life time support, no questions asked. Puppy owners are sent a comprehensive document outlining the basics of raising a puppy (toilet/crate training, diet, socialisation, grooming, relevant equipment etc) plus any handy articles we’ve found. I am also there for the life of the puppy. Each puppy is sent home with a puppy pack containing toys/collar/blanket and health/registration. We also send pups home with a weeks worth of fresh food to help with transitions.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a puppy or dog if for some reason the new family are no longer able to care for it?
Yes
I insist on being the first point of contact if such a situation arises.
Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Yes
Each puppy is sent home with 6 weeks free pet insurance. The company I currently use to offer this is Pet Plan.
