Devaloka Labradors

Labrador Retriever Dog Breeder - SOUTHPORT, QLD

At Devaloka my aim is to breed high quality Labradors who are great companions, healthy, sound & beautiful in appearance. I am a small breeder (since 2006) on the Gold Coast & my girls are my companions. I have extensive input into each litter so puppies are well socialised, trainable & becoming the excellent companions the best Labradors can be. My girls have outstanding temperaments, are gorgeous in appearance, have excellent (low) hip & elbow scores & full genetic health clearances. My current litters have been sired by two stunning males owned by Wilhelm Chang from Labraddell.

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.I only breed females with near perfect hip scores & elbow scores of zero My females have had full genetic clearances for all inherited tests available for Labradors. I breed no more often than once per year.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.My puppies are essentially part of my family life from the time they are born until they leave for their new homes and I spend all my spare time with them. As they get older I have many friends come to visit, including children, so puppies are used to interacting with different people in different circumstances.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.Absolutely. I would not sell a puppy if I was concerned that it would not be going to a good home. During the interview process I ensure that the owners & I share an understanding of what is expected of dog owners.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.I interview potential buyers verbally when they express an interest in having one of my puppies to ensure they are suitable, including a history of dogs previously owned, what they know about Labradors, how much time they have to spend training a puppy growing up & exercising the dog, and the type of home the puppy will go to (family with children, single owner, work from home)

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.New owners have my contact details and I make it clear they can contact me if they have questions / concerns. I encourage them to send me pictures of the puppy so I can follow its journey into the world. Obviously new owners are not obliged to maintain a connection with me if they prefer not to.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.I have not been faced with that situation previously but would do everything I could to help find a new home for a puppy that I had bred.
