Callicoma Kelpies - Australian Kelpie Breeder - Grafton, NSW

Australian Kelpie Dog Breeder - Grafton, NSW

Breeding quality Australian Kelpies for performance, the show ring, and as a great pet. My dogs compete in almost every "doggy discipline" they are eligible for - shows, obedience, rally agility, endurance, herding, dances with dogs and tracking. I have been training and trialling dogs in obedience, agility and showing since 1990 and have a Certificate IV in Dog Behavioural Training/Companion Animal Services - the only Nationally accredited dog training course in Australia.

My own dogs have gained 110 titles in showing, agility, obedience, agility, tracking, endurance, herding and dances with dogs. Dogs I have bred have gained that number many times over.

Our dogs are raised in the house, given Early Neurological Stimulation and raised on raw natural food only. All breeding dogs are hip and elbow x-rayed, eye checked and heart checked by a cardiologist every year.

Interested in Kelpies?
Kelpies are very active, medium sized, intelligent, loyal Australian working dogs. I would not have any other breed and recommend them to someone with time to spend exercising and training their dog. You will have a loyal companion in return.

I do not recommend kelpies for someone who does not have time to spend with their dog, or for someone that will not treat their dog kindly. Kelpies respond to kindness, and will willingly work (whether stock work, obedience, tracking or agility) for someone who rewards their efforts.

Callicoma : Winner - Best Breeder of Australian Kelpies on Dogzonline Pointscore 2017 and 2018 and 2019, and Best Breeder of all Working Dogs 2018.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.All breeding dogs are hip and elbow x-rayed, heart checked annually by a cardiologist (using ultrasound), eye checked by an opthalmologist at least once, sometimes a number of times, as well as fully DNA tested and profiled.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.They get car trips weekly, nails clipped weekly, visits by as many people as possible, early neurological socialisation, they are played sound CDs of scary noises, taken for walks on our property, handled daily, they meet with my adult dogs.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.A thousand questions when they enquire. They usually have a wait of 12 or more months which weeds out less than serious purchasers. I retain the right to refuse sale right up until they collect puppy and even when they are here at pick up if I am not 100% happy.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.Health guarantee as well as agreement I will take the dog back at any time for any reason throughout its life. All is outlined in a booklet of info the purchasers receive. Online questionnaire when people first enquire about my puppies.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.The purchasers receive a detailed info book on their puppy, explaining what we have done with the puppy and what they still need to do. I have a Facebook group with 200 people all round the world on it that own my puppies. It has become a great support network as if I am not available to answer a question then someone else will. It includes many experienced dog trainers, judges etc who are a wealth of knowledge. I tell people I will give them lifetime support, and I do - for 15 or so years until they advise me the dog has passed. Many people stay on my Callicoma group after their dog has gone as they love the support.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.Absolutely, this is on the front page of my info book. I would be very upset if they did not contact me if they had to rehome their dog.
