Brighthills Selkirk Rex

Selkirk Rex Cat Breeder - Toothdale, NSW

Located on the Far South Coast of NSW, I am a small home based breeder. As a retired Veterinary nurse I place great emphasis on Healthy breeding and breeding for temperament, which is very easy with the Selkirks as they have such a lovely laidback nature.

I have been a registered breeder of Selkirk Rex for 15 years and my kittens leave home with vaccinations x 2, microchipped and desexed. I raise my kittens on Royal Canin and home prepared meals. They are introduced to children and dogs.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).
Answer. Yes.PKD is the only required DNA test for Selkirk Rex All breeding cats are tested for PKD. This information is on my Facebook page

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?
Answer. Yes.My kittens are born inside the house. Once they are weaned by 10 weeks I move them to a kitten room. I feel that moving them teaches them to cope with a move. I send an information sheet with the kitten.

Placement & matching

Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.Verbal , occasionally personal interviews

Answer. Yes.Includes feeding regime, care after vaccinations. Your kitten in his/her new home.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.
Answer. Yes.My contact details are included and I hope that I have raised a well balanced kitten that doesn't require on going help but I am always available to answer questions and if I didn't know the answer I would consult my vet.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?
Answer. Yes.Yes, I have helped rehome a kitten after they found their child was having difficulties coping with an active kitten. I have only had to do this once but I would help out if needed.
