We are a voluntary community organization. We are committed to helping keep older pet owners and their beloved pets together, in the interests of older pet owners and their pets. Our priorities are: encouraging aged care organisations to allow pet owners moving into various forms of aged accommodation to continue living with their pets, where appropriate; and in-home support for frail-aged, low income pet owners living at home during periods of medical difficulty. We focus on practical initiatives and on the welfare needs of both older pet owners and their pets.

About Pets and Positive Ageing Inc.
Pets and Positive Ageing Inc was formerly the Pets and Aged Care Steering Group. This Group, chaired by Jan Phillips formed as a direct outcome of a Canberra community conversation in 2012 on pets and aged care, hosted by its Patron, Mary Porter AM MLA.

Pets and Positive Ageing Inc promotes the significant benefits for older Australians of being able to continue living with their pets in various forms of aged accommodation - retirement villages, hostels, independent living units and low care areas of nursing homes - and when ageing at home. We encourage local community discussions on this issue.

A priority is encouraging aged care guides and websites, and other relevant information sources for older Australians, to provide information about aged accommodation that allows people to live alongside their pets, although recognizing pets won't be appropriate in all circumstances.

Pets and Positive Ageing Inc offers practical support for change. A workshop was held on designing pet-friendly aged accommodation (see: more-like-home- ) and we have held public sessions with speakers on issues of concern to older pet owners, such as in-home pet support and supporting older pet owners through pet bereavement. Other initiatives and events are planned.

There are examples of successful pet-friendly policies which cover issues such as managing health, veterinary and animal welfare, on our website.

For those ageing at home, Pets and Positive Ageing Inc has been has been working closely with Northside Community Service (in Canberra) on its new Pet Assistance and Wellbeing Service (PAWS) - an in-home pet support program, providing support for the pet companions of frail and isolated older people to keep them together at home. This program is currently in its pilot stage, with a waiting list of potential clients. The pilot's success has underlined the critical need for PAWS and the pilot has been extended for a further period.

Pets and Positive Ageing Inc is also campaigning for pet support to become one of the standard services offered in "consumer directed" home care packages.

Pets and Positive Ageing Inc has produced a flyer for ACT residents about options in pet-friendly aged accommodation. A copy of the flyer is available on our website.
