In her past role as coordinator of the Delta Dog Safe Program she developed a passion for ensuring safe dog-child interactions. A multifaceted approach is needed to make sure kids stay safe around dogs. These approaches need to consider the training and experiences of the dog, education of children, and ongoing management by dog owners and parents. Dog Consultancy comes from this need to execute multifaceted approaches to ensuring child safety around dogs.

Tegan has also been actively involved in dog rescue since 2006 (including employment with RSPCA SA), having fostered about 100 animals, mostly dogs, through her home since 2008. Through her work with dog rescue, Tegan understands how important it is for families to make suitable decisions when selecting a dog for their household. In this way, Dog Consultancy seeks to fulfil the need of individuals and families to consult about the important decision of adding a dog to their family.

Not only is Tegan involved in rescue, but she is a registered and ethical breeder of Border Terriers. Her own dogs partake in a variety of sports, including conformation, tracking, earthdog, dancing, and others. Tegan understands how to train dogs as pets and also for specialised tasks. She is a ANKC judge of earthdog, and has been the training officer for the Tracking Dog Club of SA Inc since 2011.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.No compulsory testing for our breed through the ANKC, but all dogs have been DNAed tested for SLEM (breed specific), or are clear by parentage.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.Extensive socialisation using a combination of Dr Ian Dunbar and Puppy Culture.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.I talk to those interested in purchasing a puppy carefully. I encourage them to meet me and my dogs at home or at dog sports. I do not keep a waiting list, as I expect puppy buyers to proactively contact me.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.All buyers have to agree to a contract and agreement of sale. They are informally verbally interviewed.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.I will take any dog back for the entirity of their life - this is specified in the sale agreement.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.I will take an animal back. I would not promote the buyer re-homing the dog themselves.
