MistyRiver Bengals is a small, home-based cattery with a big love for the Bengal breed.

Our cats are first and foremost cherished members of our family. They live freely within our home and are raised in a loving, enriching environment with plenty of attention and socialisation.

We specialise in beautiful brown and snow rosetted Bengals, with a strong focus on health, temperament and quality. Our breeding cats undergo recommended health and genetic testing, and we carefully plan our pairings with the goal of producing healthy, confident and affectionate kittens with the wonderful personalities Bengals are known for.

Our kittens are raised right in the heart of our home, giving them the best possible start before joining their forever families.

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).
Answer. Yes.All of our MistyRiver breeding Bengals undergo breed-appropriate health screening. Our breeding program includes DNA testing for inherited conditions relevant to Bengals, including PRA-b (Progressive Retinal Atrophy – Bengal), PKDef (Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency), and PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). Carrier status and health results are carefully considered when planning pairings to avoid producing kittens affected by known inherited conditions. HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) is an important health consideration within the Bengal breed. As there is currently no definitive Bengal-specific DNA test that can rule out HCM, our breeding program includes HCM screening by cardiac echocardiogram, with ongoing screening throughout a cat’s breeding career. We carefully consider health results, pedigrees and relevant family health history when selecting breeding pairs and are committed to transparency with our kitten families regarding the health testing of our breeding cats and lines. The health and long-term wellbeing of our cats and kittens is always a priority at MistyRiver Bengals.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?
Answer. Yes.Our kittens are raised within our home as part of the family and receive plenty of daily handling, cuddles, play and positive human interaction from a young age. We gradually desensitise them to everyday household sights and sounds, including vacuum cleaners, television, music, household activity and the sounds of barking dogs, helping them develop into confident and adaptable kittens. They are provided with plenty of enrichment, toys, climbing opportunities and space to explore, while also learning to interact appropriately with our other cats. We place a strong emphasis on temperament and socialisation, with the goal of raising affectionate, confident and well-adjusted Bengals. Our new families are also provided with guidance on settling their kitten into their new home, continuing positive socialisation and providing appropriate enrichment so their kitten can continue to thrive.

Placement & matching

Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.Yes, ensuring our kittens go to the right forever homes is extremely important to us. We take the time to get to know prospective families through conversations and ask questions about their household, lifestyle, other pets, experience with cats and what they are looking for in a Bengal. This helps us determine whether a Bengal is suitable for their home and which kitten’s individual personality may be the best match. We are always happy to have phone or personal conversations with prospective families and encourage them to ask plenty of questions as well. We want families to understand the Bengal breed, including their intelligence, energy levels, enrichment needs and desire for interaction before making a commitment. Our responsibility does not end when a kitten leaves MistyRiver Bengals. We remain available to our families for ongoing advice and support throughout the kitten’s life, and the welfare and happiness of every kitten we produce will always remain important to us.
Question. What written information about the conditions of sale, warranty, and information concerning the care and maintenance of the breed do you provide?
Answer. Yes.All MistyRiver Bengals families are provided with a comprehensive written sales contract, which must be read, agreed to and signed prior to the kitten leaving our care. The contract clearly outlines the conditions of sale, the responsibilities of both breeder and owner, and our expectations regarding the kitten’s ongoing care and welfare.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. No.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.
Answer. Yes.We provide ongoing lifetime support to all MistyRiver Bengals families and encourage our owners to contact us whenever they need advice or guidance. We are available to assist with settling a kitten into their new home, introductions to existing cats or dogs, feeding, enrichment, litter habits and behavioural concerns. If an owner has concerns about their kitten’s health, we are also happy to provide guidance and encourage appropriate veterinary care where required.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?
Answer. Yes.Yes. The welfare of every kitten we breed remains important to us throughout their lifetime. If an owner is ever unable to continue caring for their Bengal, we ask that they contact us so we can assist with finding a suitable and loving new home or discuss the best option for the cat. We do not want any MistyRiver Bengal surrendered to a shelter or placed into an unsuitable home without support.
