Grandesprit Brittanys and Poodles - Grandesprit Homestead

Brittany, Poodle - Standard Dog Breeder - Melbourne Victoria

2026 Will bring forward a new approach to our breeding program with our first two litters not far away and the next two litters being finalised it was time to adapt to our different times.

I feel the way we have been breeding dogs need a makeover. We're approaching 15years of being breeders and have learnt so much along the way. From our time living and showing in Europe to recently breeding horses as well as the many litters along the way that have brought us so much joy.

One particular knowledge which has been present with me from the start but is so much more relevant today is how important health and genetics are which is why all our dogs and bitches are health tested to the highest standard and have been for generations, with international pedigrees we can achieve a diversity that can be sadly lost on Australian soil.

Parents to be are always in the greatest optimal health as much physically as mentally.
All their needs catered for so they can raise their litter in the most wholistic way. We want our mums to be as involved as possible and wean their puppies on their own terms.

This means great food and enrichment daily with a good routine of physical health and mental health focus and a place to rest away from the puppies if needed/wanted.

The next most important step is nutrition. We've been focusing on a diet that puts the Gut Biome as a priority.
Raw diet as well as high quality kibbles like Lifewise and barking good as well as supplements like purple boost and in-sideout, have been a must and lately we have also teamed up with Lyka who offers the balance between raw and kibble as well as offering delivery to your door which we love!

Another important aspect of raising healthy puppies of body and mind is having a good balanced pack to teach the puppies what can't be taught by us humans.

So our pack has a rescue old grumpy hunting dog (we've vouched to always have a rescue and at 15 he is still going strong!), a large motherly guardian dog (guardian dogs are great teachers), some playful young active short coat medium dogs (who doesn't like to rough and tumble with dogs that have a zest for life), older less playful fluffy prancy dogs (body language is hard to read on coated breed so it's a wonderful way for the puppies to learn).

All our dogs are well versed in puppy language and are patient and kind. The puppies get to interact with this balanced pack supervised regularly while with us. They are also teamed up with appropriate playmates so they can interact and learn skills positively.

Our knowledge and skills also allows us to implement tools like Early neurological Stimulation and early scent introduction.
As well as introducing Manding, the communication trilogy, crate exposure, numerous grooming exposures, doggy door exposure, leash training, car/transport exposure, operant conditioning, farm animals and cat exposure, 20-40people of different shape and size exposure, which is nearly half way to the 100 they need by 16weeks, different environments and enrichment as well.

Many of these protocols came from the puppy culture program which we have adapted to our breeds individual needs.

As you can see all this above takes time, knowledge and money.

Every dollar made goes into feeding high quality food, providing veterinary care, as well as the daily enrichments and comfortable safe adapted areas of play and rest for our four legged family. Some also needs to be used to import new lines into the country or work with other like minded breeders to make sure the diversity is kept to a high standard.

This is what cross breeds advertise as hybrid vigor, fact is you don't need to cross to have better health, working on diversity with tools like better bred and UC Davies university in America like we do is what helps us achieve this without crossing breeds.

We've now set up a raising/education program that caters for these different option that are offered. As I know many families can be busy and lack the time to raise a puppy but still want a fantastic dog.

I know that the time, love, knowledge and passion we have for our dogs and breeds is hard to put a price on but we feel these above reflect what we can achieve so we can continue breeding and contributing to homes welcoming wonderful family members while still giving our dogs the greatest care and time.

We will also have a catch up and learning afternoon may it be at our property or online every 3rd Saturday of each month. More information on this will be on our Grandesprit savoir-faire Facebook page, link will be given to all our new puppy owners.

These days will be filmed or discussed and put on the page for domestic/interstate home to benefit from.

Raising a puppy into a wonderful adult can be so much fun but when those times are challenging having the support of us all will give you the tools and trust you can achieve it all.

To this date we've successfully bred assistance, grooming comp, show champions, sport champions, and therapy prospects as well as well loved family members who love children.

We are extremely thankful for everyone's trust and we hope to continue to do what we do best, welcome fabulous puppy into this world for fabulous homes. Lifetime support and a Grandesprit family for life.

Health testing & screening

Answer. Yes.Hips for both breeds Orivet full DNA profile. All our dogs are clear, no carriers

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.What the puppy journey looks like while in our care: In an ideal situation where all the puppies are healthy and hitting their milestones as expected and mum is going well. Taking into account individual needs and fear periods some adjustments often have to be made along the way. This is what your puppy will experience with us. Birth to 3 days Daily cuddles and making sure mum has mothers pudding numerous times a day as well as the usual diet she needs for milk production and maintenance, fenugreek may be added if needed as well as divetelact supplement. 3days to 16days The puppies have their ears closed and will open their eyes between 9-14days of age ENS and ESI are introduced daily. We will also have 2 short car rides on our property with mum present. Interaction with our children who are well versed in caring for puppies. 16days to 4weeks The puppies are still in their whelping box but can see and hear and are becoming more mobile. We will start introducing sounds that they need to get used to, puppy sound proof app to begin followed by actually real life sounds. They will also get introduced to different texture and will begin their gut biome journey with one meal then two meals a day. Mum is still very present and she continues to be the puppies main provider. The puppies will also experience 2 car rides to town which are around 15min return. Lastly the main grooming journey begins, the use of the electric toothbrush at meal time, a dryer as background noise and clipping of feet as well as a little wipe down with water and being towel dried. The puppies are also now on an elevated bed and the rest of the whelping box constitute of fabric puppy pads so they can start understanding to not soil their sleeping area. 4-6weeks The puppies move to their dedicated area where they will stay until departure. This area has a big sleeping area surrounded by fabric puppy pads and a direct opening via a doggy door to the outdoors. The outdoor consists of a play area, a digging area, numerous wobbly platforms and toys of different shapes, size and texture. Puppies are fed inside near their sleeping area and the puppy call operant conditioning is started as they now have 3 to 5 meals a day. Mum has the choice to be with them or to remain in the house and supervise from a distance. Most mums usually start spending a few hours a day away from them but still sleep with them at night. We start introducing elements of the communication trilogy as well as Manding. We will have another car ride that will be around 30min. They will also have their first wash and dry as we continue to clip their nails weekly. Our dogs will start to interact with them from the other side of the fence and the puppies will be able to move away or approach on their own terms. They will attend their puppy party on our property where they haven’t been before where they will meet many families. 6-8weeks The crate is introduced and the sleeping area now consists of one big crate with direct access to the outdoor via a doggy door. Puppies now get separated individually from the pack for 10-15min at a time. They get to experience some short session with toys, introduction to leash and harness and continued sounds to experience on their own as well as enrichment like a licky mat or snuffle mat. Mum has an elevated area outside where she can continue to be part of their days if needed/wanted but also gets to join the pack, she will sleep with them from time to time but that will depends on what she wants to do, the crate is big enough for her and the puppies if she wishes to sleep with them. We start offering bigger meals 3 times a day with the midday meal being more of an enrichment snack like a bone or a snuffle mat with treats. A car ride to the vet which is an hour round trip for their first health check and C3 and microchip happens very close to the 8weeks mark. They will meet many nurses and vets at the clinics. They will experience two grooms some with a wash & blowdry, and the other with clipper and scissors. Some puppies will leave us at 8weeks 8-10weeks The puppies start going on daily pack walks with mum around the property where they’ll get to meet sheep, alpacas, chickens, ducks, horses and ponies. Their individual training session are focused on touch, down, sit and look but we don’t introduce the words yet. These session are very short 3-5min, multiple times weekly. They will be separated from the whole litter during the day and matched to the litter mates their get along with the most, usually in teams of 2, they will also start properly interacting with the pack supervised without a fence in between. Mum can continue to be with them should she wishes but we’ve found at this time most mums are happy to let the other dogs continue their education and playtime. They continue to sleep in their crates at night with access to the doggy door but we have now removed the puppy pads and there are multiple smaller crates instead of one large crate. Some puppies will leave us at 10weeks. 10-12weeks We will start to solidify commands like touch, down, sit and look. Another grooming session with the dryer on a stronger setting happens close to 12weeks. Puppies now have the crate closed from 10pm till 6am. They continue their daily pack walks with different pack members. We go on bigger trips to the city and sit by to watch trains, traffic lights and aircraft landing. Leash training is properly started and we ask the puppies to have formal sniff session and focused sessions on their 5-10min walks around the property or in the house. They receive their second health check and a C5 vaccination. Some puppies will leave us at 12weeks From 12weeks to 6months We continue all the exposure and training started at 6weeks but increase the length of time for the session. We start focusing on resilience to being on their own and increase enrichment. Grooming session are spaced every two weeks. We attend and watch obedience club training and show events.
