Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.If a dog is considered for breeding, Xray Hip and Elbow testing is performed; the results inform mating selection such that only breeding pairs with combined ‘better than breed average’ scores are used. ACES eye exams are performed before breeding. I also perform repeat eye testing at approximately 5 years of age. DNA testing is performed either through ORIVET or EMBARK, or occasionally Mars DNA if the dog is of European origin. I also extensively used the Lappalaiskoirat health database to inform health risks for the breeding dogs that I use.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.Puppies are socialised to indoor and outdoor environments, and the sounds of normal family life; vacuum cleaners, music, the bustle of people coming and going. We usually have a couple of play dates where they meet a range of new people. Our 2025 setup for indoor/outdoor toilet training has worked very well indeed and puppies should be already used to the distinction by 8 weeks of age. Pups are introduced to the basics of focus training, and plenty of handling and mouth/nail care. They have ample room and toys for play, and usually a grandma or big sister to play with when Mum needs a break from them.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.If you can’t come and meet me and the puppies in person, I do prefer a phone call and a chat. You need to feel very confident that you are buying a puppy from a caring and responsible environment and I need to feel the same. This due diligence works for us both.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.Definitely a verbal conversation is the minimum for you and I to be sure this is the right choice for the puppy. I recommend desexing of female puppies after about 18 months of age. I would prefer to be the first port of call if your circumstances change and you need to rehome your puppy.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. Yes.I recommend pups go home with 4 to 6 weeks insurance even if you don’t intend to keep this going. If you haven’t arranged this yourself, I will set it up for you.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.The Bucolick Puppy Buyers have been a tremendous bunch of people and generally we have a social media group where both myself and owners of other pups all pitch in for advice and sharing. I’m also always available via email.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.Yes, I’d prefer to be the first contact if your circumstances change.
