Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).
Answer. Yes.Yes, we carry out genetic testing for diseases that are known to affect the Maine Coon breed including: - Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) - Polycystic Kidney Disease - Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency - Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?
Answer. Yes.Kittens go through several important developmental stages in the first 14 weeks of life. There are multiple socialisation "windows" that occur during this time. For this reason, it is crucial that kittens are afforded gentle, paced and timely exposure to novel stimuli throughout this period. Having a sound understanding of animal training and conditioning concepts means that we will always prioritise this aspect of breeding. Ensuring this means that our kittens become confident, happy pets that are well equipped to deal with all the parts of busy life, once they join their new families.

Placement & matching

Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.We screen prospective families with a written questionnaire and follow up phone calls for those who progress. We love our kittens so will only part with them to the very best of homes. Our babies will only go to homes where they are an indoor (or enclosed outdoor) only pet. This is for the safety of both the cats and the local native wildlife.
Question. What written information about the conditions of sale, warranty, and information concerning the care and maintenance of the breed do you provide?
Answer. Yes.We provide a contract of sale. This outlines warranty information as mandated by the ANCATS Breeder Code of Ethics. We also provide husbandry information with each kitten, including general care and feeding recommendations. The kitten's pedigree is sent out to new families once the kittens have been registered.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. No.No, not at this stage. We do, however, encourage all new owners to take out pet insurance as we do.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.
Answer. Yes.Yes, we provide ongoing support to new owners regarding any husbandry, feeding behavioural, health or other concerns that may arise. We want our kittens to thrive in their new homes and for owners to feel properly equipped.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?
Answer. Yes.Yes, we will assist with rehoming and will always insist that the cats have a safe interim home here if ever you should end up in that situation.
