Cadfell Mastiffs - Mastiff Breeder - Port Stephens, NSW

Mastiff Dog Breeder - NSW

Cadfell Mastiffs is a small kennel situated in the beautiful Port Stephens region of NSW Australia. We have four Mastiffs and one rescue Bullmastiff cross who live with us on a few acres of paradise.

Our aim at Cadfell is to breed sound, healthy, typical Mastiffs with good temperaments that are well suited to becoming loved family members. To that end, we will only breed from dogs that we consider to be well bred, healthy, sound animals that have had hip and elbow scored as a minimum. All our dogs are happy, well adjusted and live with us in a family environment. They are regularly walked around the neighbourhood and love to meet all the neighbours and their dogs, and we often get some interesting looks and comments whilst walking three or even more Mastiffs on the lead.

Our vision of the Mastiff is a large, powerful, active, fit and agile dog that can run, play and live an enjoyable life. To us, the ideal size for a Mastiff male is around 32 inches in height and 100 kg in weight. He should be an imposing animal, very muscular and powerful...not as tall as a Great Dane, but much more strongly built. He should have a large, square head without too much wrinkle and have powerful hindquarters to provide great drive to his movement, He should appear to move effortlessly and easily despite his great size. I envision the ideal bitch being a bit smaller than the males, ideally around the 30 inch height and 80 kilo weight, but equally strong in build to her male counterpart, with a strong, but feminine head. We are still working on it!!!

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test appropriately (eg hip and elbow X-ray scoring, DNA testing), and understand the genetic issues that may affect your breed? If your breed is prone to health issues, what are they, and what testing practices do you have in place?
Answer. Yes.Cadfell Mastiff breeding dogs are hip and elbow xrayed and DNA tested for Cystinuria, PRA, DM and CMR1.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your puppies are properly socialised?
Answer. Yes.My pups have constant daily interaction with my wife and I, as we are both retired we have plenty of time to play and teach puppies. They spend time both inside in our puppy room and romping around outside in our large puppy run. They also have daily interaction with our other dogs. After their first vaccination, we encourage visitors to meet our pups.

Placement & matching

Question. Is making sure your puppies go to the right homes a priority? How do you ensure they are placed in loving, responsible homes?
Answer. Yes.I have lots of questions I ask folks inquiring about our pups, and I like to meet them and understand what they are looking for in a pup, to ensure a good match is made.
Question. Do you have any of the following: conditions of sale, health guarantee or warranty, de-sexing agreement, a buyer questionnaire, verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.I like to talk to anyone interested in a Cadfell Mastiff puppy, and encourage people to come and visit us if possible.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. No.I suggest people find their own insurance that best suits them before the puppy arrives.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support?
Answer. Yes.I like to stay in regular contact with our puppy buyers and help with any issues or problems they have. If ever they cannot look after a pup for any reason, I prefer the dog to come back to us when I will rehome the dog to a nice home.
Question. Do you assist the buyer with re-homing an animal that was purchased from you if they are unable to keep it?
Answer. Yes.If ever they cannot look after a pup for any reason, I prefer the dog to come back to us when I will rehome the dog to a nice home.
