East Maines Cattery, Melbourne, Maine Coon Breeder

Maine Coon Cat Breeder - Melbourne VIC

Hi! My name is Laurah, I have a small cattery of Maine Coons in Melbourne, Australia.

I fell in love with Maine Coons the moment I laid eyes on the breed, they are truly the most majestic cats. I attended cat shows to understand the standards, met some amazing breeders, and started our journey by registering as a recognised pedigree breeder with ANCATS and adopting our first Queen, Stormy. (Anjayma Sweet Pea).

Angela, from Anjayma Maine Coons, has been a brilliant mentor to me over the past 2 years. Guiding me through the world of genetics, pattern and colouring, what to look for in a breeding cat, raw feeding advice, the endless document requirements, and much more! I wouldn't be where I am today without her and I am very grateful.

I managed to convince my family to come along for the ride, and now here we are! We are now one stunning litter in and have 3 Queens: Stormy, Salem, and Torrie. We have one stud: Ghost, and another stud, Wolfie, that we share with Anjayma.

Our cats in more detail:
Stormy: Silver Black Tabby Tortie (Anjayama Sweet Pea).
Salem: Solid Black Poly (Anjayama Runaround Sue).
Torrie: Brown Classic (Anjayama Tourmaline of Kazabrook).
Ghost: Cream Silver Tabby (Anjayama Ghost Fox).
Wolfie: Black Silver Classic (Saphire Db Ch & National Ch Icecoons Wolfsbane).

Our standards & practices

Health testing & screening

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).
Answer. Yes.I DNA test for blood type to ensure I don't breed B type cats. All of my breeding cats have tested negative in their DNA tests for SMA, known HCM genes, PKD and PKDef. My cats have also had echocardiograms and their hips scored.

Preparation & socialisation

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?
Answer. Yes.Our kittens grow up in our family environment (I have 2 kids and a husband), they are handled often from 3ish weeks onwards. During their first 6ish weeks they are in a whelping box in my bedroom so I can keep a super close eye on them and assist mum (Our Queen) with anything she needs. Once they start learning to jump over the sides of the box they graduate to our bigger kitten run downstairs where they're let out to run around in our kitchen/family area between sleep times and meal times. This gives them plenty of room to explore whilst supervised to ensure their safety. We play with them often, play music, and run the washing machine and vacuum regularly to get them used to loud noises. Sometimes they would have been entered in a cat show, and met their new owners once or twice. By the time they go to their new homes they are usually very excited to explore their new surroundings and are very quick to adapt. We've had one litter so far and every single one acted as if they had lived in their new home for weeks instead of a few hours when they went home.

Placement & matching

Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?
Answer. Yes.I have a questionnaire that I've sent out to families including a list of questions about their current family/pets, their ethical thoughts towards delawing and health, their current vet plans, and rehoming. I also FaceTime and go back and forth over messages to gauge if it's a good fit.
Question. What written information about the conditions of sale, warranty, and information concerning the care and maintenance of the breed do you provide?
Answer. Yes.I have a contract that covers health, rehoming, and safety. I also provide a booklet and document that outline in-depth care instructions.

Insurance options

Question. Do you offer pet insurance?
Answer. No.No not yet however I have been looking into some for the future.

Ongoing support

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.
Answer. Yes.I maintain contact with all the families that have East Maines kittens via a group in Whatsapp. We exchange regular updates, photos, and discuss general advice. My first litter has built a great community together, and I will continue to do this with future litters in different chats within my East Maines group.
Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?
Answer. Yes.On my website I advise I am open for any of our previous kittens to be returned if needed. I also have this written into my contract and maintain open communication with previous litters' families so they know they can contact me at any time.
