Niyah - Confident Kitty

Domestic Short Hair Kittens & Cats For Adoption - VIC

Niyah is definitely one of the more interesting & action packed kittens we've fostered, as well as loving & affectioate. It's been such a joy to foster her.

She came to us intact with a 2yo old intact male & went into her first heat just after she arrived, so it was a pretty bonkers time & she's still coming down off that just a tiny bit. As well as still being a kitten...

She's a very confident kitten, with a touch of separation anxiety when she first arrived. I couldn't leave her alone, but now she's settled in a bit better the past 3wks & I don't hear that from her now. However, she does have some other quirks that are more likely her personality traits than simple kitten behaviour.

As much as she's a cat's cat, she is also a resource guarder. Mostly with her chicken neck, but she might also do it with other food or treats & she isn't shy about pushing another cat out of their own bowl.

Resource guarding can be concerning behaviour & shouldn't be ignored. When it happens, we move the cat (Niyah) to another room & bring their food or treat & keep them isolated while they finish. But it's easier to just keep cats separated at meal times or when giving them necks or wing tips.

Niyah is a uniquely mercurial cat. A little bitey, but rarely vicious & not what I'd call spicy. She flashes her murder mittens quite often, but I still don't have a single scratch from her from playing & rough housing for 3wks! That's a first. She communicates with her mouth to let you know she doesn't like something. It's just a warning. And she uses it to carry things around (which is uber adorable), as well as for love bites (yes, cats give love bites) & for more intense play fighting.

Once she wants something, she can become a little single-minded & often undeterred from whatever it is. Real or imagined. In these situations we find gentle parenting energy is best & just keep repeating the same phrase or command for the action you want, even if you're doing it for them, like gently putting them down off the bench 20 times.

Cats don't respond well to yelling, it just teaches them to be scared & it's much less stressful to stay calm & just use the same language each time you do the thing.

She's very clever kitty though. Picks things up pretty quickly, is very much a problem solver & one might say she's a bit of an empath or caregiver... Any time I've been upset, she makes a unique squeak sound & might trill while she's running to me to comfort me.

Paws up on your chest, sometimes making biscuits & then loving, full head bonks in your face until she feels satisfied you're ok. She also did this with her former owner, so it's a definite trait & one of my personal faves.

Niyah has spent her whole life with 2yo male who she's friendly with, and has interacted quite a bit with our two residents in ways that give me hope she'll adapt to other new cats & I don't think the gender is an issue for her. As long as you have a fishing rod toy you're golden. And it's definitely wise to get a kicker toy for when she gets a little too excited.

Niyah is a healthy raw/high quality fed kitten who has been wormed, flea treated, vaccinated, desexed and microchipped (microchip #956000017382437, source #RE101165). She is available for adoption. Her adoption fee also includes her second vaccination at one of our rescue vets.
