Yarraleigh Curly Horse Stud
Yarraleigh is a small Curly Horse stud located just outside of Ballarat, Victoria, approximately 1 hour from Melbourne. This picturesque 150 acre farm breeds both cattle and horses but we specialise in the Hypo-allergenic Curly Horse.
I have been allergic to horses for as long as I can remember, but for as long as I can remember have always loved them. In 2008 I decided that the effects of horses on me was just getting too much to put up with and I had to either give them up or find an alternative. Fortunately for me I was able to find an alternative being the Curly Horses.
Initially we imported frozen semen from Canada and have bred 3 wonderful foals (a colt and 2 fillies - see curly foals section). After getting these foals on the ground, we loved the breed so much we decided to import a stallion to bring this wonderful horse to Australia (see our stallion pictured - "Moonlight"). Moonlight arrived in June 2011 and he is absolutely wonderful. Friendly, easy going and fantastic to handle.
About Curlies:
The Curly is a breed of horse that is known to be hypo-allergenic. Recent studies have concluded that the Curly Horse is hypo-allergenic which means that people with allergies will have little to no reaction to them - a dream come true for allergic horse lovers giving them the chance to pursue their love of horses!!!!!!!
Curlies come in all sizes, colours and body types, but all carry a gene for a unique curly coat of hair. The Curlies are known for their calm, intelligent and friendly personality and show an easily trainable temperament. They are also known for having a tough constitution and great stamina. The Curly has a characteristic long stride and bold movement. They have tough hooves, strong bones and exceptional endurance. Most Curlies stand between 14 and 16 hands but we will be breeding them down to pony size so children who are allergic to horses are able to experience the love and joy of owning a pony.
Most people have found that the curlies enjoy being around people. The curlies are typically not flightly, they tend to do more reasoning than most breeds. They are very reliable and have a great work ethic. The other thing about Curlies is they are well known for being non spooky type horses. They would rather plant their feet than turn and run. If you handle them right, build a relationship out of trust and respect, use natural horsemanship techniques with consistent daily handling, you will have a bond with your Curly you never thought was possible with any horse. When they give you their heart, they give 100%. That is the magic and wonder of the breed.
