Glenmaulyn Cattery first began in the 1960's when my mother, Sylvia Cooper, was given a magnificent pale blue longhair male by the name of Lavendel Blue Monarch, and from then on, bred longhairs for many years, then in 1990 we fell in love with our first abyssinian who stole our hearts.

Since 1990, with thanks to Jan Fuller and with the help of the then newly founded Cat Owners Association of Western Australia, my mother and I began to breed the Abyssinian and Somali with the same passion my mother had all those years ago.

These cats are lively and intelligent with purrsonality plus. They are very much 'people' cats who love to play and help with whatever you are doing whether it be reading, typing on the computer or housework, and then when all is done to make themselves comfortable on your lap for a kiss and cuddle.

Abys and somalis come in several colours, namely tawny (also described as ruddy or usual), sorrel (also described as cinnamon), blue, fawn and in the silver variety (black, blue, sorrel and fawn). Their distinct 'wild' look comes from the ticking which all abyssinian and somali cats should possess. In the the somali it can take up to 18 months to develop fully.

The somali is described as a semi longhair aby, answering to the same standard, the only difference being the coat which is long and silky in texture with a foxy tail, and does not have the tendancy to matt. They require and enjoy a regular comb through about once a week or as often as you like to.

No matter what kind of kitten or cat you love and look after, we support and thoroughly recommend all cats be sterilized and micro-chipped. A run attached to the house is an excellent idea. This way the wildlife is protected as well as your life long friend.

Question. Do you health test in accordance with the current standards and recommended guidelines for your breed? Can you demonstrate your knowledge of any required DNA or other health related test results concerning your breed (if applicable).

PK Deficiency, In the past when PKDef was newly discovered, we learnt not to breed 2 positive cats together. By breeding positive to a negative then testing and keeping a negative, it was bred out of the lines PRA - abys/Somalis. All my cats have been tested and are clear for both. Some are also blood grouped. I am always keen to pass on any information ie proof of testing, in the lines and to help my clients understand.

Question. Do you ensure that your kittens are appropriately socialised? Please provide details about how you raise your kittens to ensure that their environmental and social needs are met, that they are suitable as pets. And, do you ensure that the new family understands and is equipped to continue this socialisation?

Yes

My husband and I are retired so home all day. Kittens are born in their own room inside the house and handled from a very early age. When they are eating and then ready to come out into the socialising room they become familiar with all the noises of the house including vacuum cleaners, moping, washing machine. Grandchildren handle them under supervision only. I do not mix my kittens with adult cats until they are vaccinated - just a precaution I have always taken, however, they can see them. By the time they are ready to go, they are well socialised and love to curl up on your lap. They are happy to greet their prospective parents if we are sure that they will be suitable. I offer a 2 week cooling off period where if the situation changes or they change their minds to return the kitten to me at once.

Question. What written information about the conditions of sale, warranty, and information concerning the care and maintenance of the breed do you provide?

Yes

They sign a Transfer form NOT TO BE BRED FROM (I generally do early desexing), however, if not desexed, I follow up to make sure that they are, or make an appointment to book them in to my vet. I also provide Pedigree, microchip details, vaccinations record, registration and transfer, a comprehensive Diet Sheet, worming and flea treatments, information on the breed, poisonous plants, outdoor enclosures adjoining the house. Question. Is ensuring that your kittens go to the right home a high priority? How do you ensure that the kitten will be a good fit, and be well cared for in its new home? Do you have a verbal or personal interview?

Yes

I like to talk with them face to face. I just know that they are right. I have been know to tell them so, if I feel that they are not ready or not suitable. They are also welcome to come again to visit.

Question. Do you offer ongoing support? For example: Help with introducing a kitten to other animals; help with any health or behavioural problems that might occur.

Yes

I either ring them in a day or so or they will contact me. Send photos to show how they are setting in. I will always be happy to advise them and help with any issues which may arise.

Question. In the long term, do you assist with re-homing a kitten or cat if for some reason the new family are unable to care for it?

Yes

Same as per kittens to any cat I rehome.
